What if the locals advised the visitors about their estuary? How to enjoy the place from an insiders view? And how to respect it in order to preserve it?
‘Wider than a river’ is a collection of generously shared thoughts and reflections from people who live around the Exe estuary. It offers different ways to look at, experience and value the Estuary throughout the year, whether you are a local or a visitor.
Locally we all care for and enjoy the estuary in our own ways and our knowledge of it can enhance visitor experience and offer opportunities visitors may not have thought of or had a chance to find out on their own.
This is a small ‘pilot’ project reflecting a wider movement to invite residents to contribute their first-hand knowledge of the place they live to be part of a holistic approach to the evolving leisure use of the natural world. New housing in the area will increase visitor numbers and lockdown has increased use of natural or wild spaces.
The leaflet combines beautiful images by Shelley Castle with observations and comments from conversations with 9 local residents who know the estuary well from different locations and viewpoints around the estuary.
